On February 1st, the La Pietra Coalition launched the Third Billion Campaign in New York City, a new global initiative aimed at expanding women’s access to education, employment, finance, and markets. The campaign will also encourage corporations and NGOs all over the world to tap into the enormous economic potential that women represent as employees, entrepreneurs, producers and consumers.

The Third Billion Campaign is based on the results of a report by Booz & Company, which determined that approximately 860 million women worldwide are denied the education and support they need in order to participate in the global economy. Over the next ten years, these 860 million will become 1 billion, and constitute the emerging market with the greatest potential to accelerate global economic growth. The value of women’s empowerment goes far beyond the philanthropic scope; rather, it is the key to economic development.

Since 2010, Pro Mujer has been a member of La Pietra Coalition, an alliance of corporations, governments, nonprofit organizations and educational institutions all committed to the belief that investing in women is good for the economy. We share La Pietra’s belief in the power of women to stimulate growth and create lasting change. In fact, it is the driving force behind our work – that all women, regardless of socioeconomic status, have the potential to be powerful agents of change if only given the opportunity.
