As part of its efforts to encourage valuable conversations and raise awareness of the structural barriers that women face in Latin America, Pro Mujer launched its #MujeresBreakingBarriers campaign. This outreach campaign shared the stories of diverse women to highlight the incredible potential that can be unleashed when women have access to appropriate tools and opportunities.

#MujeresBreakingBarriers focused on raising awareness of the unconscious gender biases, cultural stereotypes, and opportunity gaps that impact women’s lives across social and cultural realities.

The conversations that emerged from the campaign made it clear that, despite the significant progress made since that disastrous fire on March 8, 1908, when 129 women died while fighting for their rights, women are still fighting against structural barriers and a long history of inequality.

These conversations highlighted the importance of working together to eliminate unconscious gender biases, which prop up the persistent barriers that impact women, and of weaving networks of solidarity among women to implement collaborative action to support gender equality.

Carmen Correa, CEO of Pro Mujer; Monica Fonseca, Colombian-American journalist; Agustina Clemente, founder of Wiki Cancer; and Tatiana Calderon, Formula One test driver, all participated in the campaign, along with Sandra Valeriano, Karen Halfmann, Balbina Navarro, Cristina Olmos, and Fatima del Carmen, women entrepreneurs who received support from Pro Mujer and successfully changed their lives.

Like these five women, over the past 33 years, more than 2 million women have benefited from Pro Mujer’s holistic and integrated model, which brings a gender and intersectional approach to its three key areas of focus: financial inclusion, expanded access to health services, and access to entrepreneurship skilling and training opportunities.
