Pro Mujer and MetLife Foundation: A Year of Building Healthy Communities in Southeast Mexico

An unhealthy woman cannot reach her full potential and become an agent of change in her community. This truth is overwhelmingly evident in southeastern Mexico, where more than half of women in rural areas do not have health coverage (ENIGH).

In a region where 6 out of 10 women live in poverty (Coneval), access to health and education are fundamental pillars of building a more just future. In 2024, Pro Mujer and MetLife Foundation joined forces on the “Healthy Communities” project to transform the lives of more than 4,000 women in Southeast Mexico.

The project provides access to educational opportunities focused on building participants’ digital and leadership skills and encouraging their personal development using the virtual and hybrid Emprende Pro Mujer programs. The project also offers comprehensive health care, including access to health care services and information on diseases such as diabetes and breast cancer, that allow women to make informed decisions about their well-being.

Over the past year, the project has:

  • Trained more than 1,000 women entrepreneurs.
  • Reached more than 8,000 women through talks, health services, educational chatbots, and health screenings.
  • Provided more than 790 free mammograms.

The transformative impact of this initiative is also reflected in the various health fairs we hosted in Tabasco and Yucatan, which provided women with access to essential medical care and created safe spaces where they could receive comprehensive care and counseling.

This partnership with MetLife Foundation proves that investing in women means investing in healthy, resilient communities. In 2025, we look forward to expanding our impact and changing the lives of more women in southeastern Mexico.
