Pro Mujer presents the Women’s Card Deck: A tool to recognize gender inequalities

In 2021, a survey by Focus 2030 and Women Deliver in 17 countries around the world revealed that 80% of respondents considered gender equality to be an important cause on a personal level. However, talking about the gender gap can be overwhelming, particularly if there are no tools available to facilitate dialogue and reach consensus.

Faced with this challenge, Pro Mujer created the “Women’s Card Deck,” a fun alternative to creatively and experientially bring knowledge about gender. This innovative product proposes swift individual, couple, or group dynamics to discover concepts and link them to everyday situations that women go through in order to encourage reflection.

The Women’s Card Deck applies an educational approach to talk about gender that breaks with traditional dynamics to invite participants to express their own reflections, share stories, and recognize themselves in the experiences of others.

What’s included in the deck?

The deck includes four main types of cards, each with a specific purpose:

Concept cards: These cards introduce key gender-related terms such as inequality, sisterhood, and empowerment. Each card includes suggested questions to guide reflection, allowing participants to delve deeper into the topics from their own experiences.

Everyday situation cards: These depict everyday life scenarios that illustrate gender inequalities, such as double workload or symbolic violence. These cards invite participants to connect the abstract with the tangible, helping them to identify how these dynamics manifest in their environment.

Emotion cards: A tool to name the feelings that arise during play. Does a situation frustrate you? Does the idea of change fill you with hope? These cards provide a space to express and explore those emotions.

Empowerment cards: They contain inspiring phrases from Latin American leaders who seek to reconnect women with their inner power. They are perfect for closing sessions, leaving participants with a feeling of empowerment and satisfaction.

Additionally, the deck includes a “Stop” card, which offers participants the chance to pause the game if they need to, either because they feel uncomfortable or simply need a break.

How to play

The Women’s Card Deck can be used in different game modes, making it ideal for workshops, group activities, or even individual sessions. These are some of the dynamics that it proposes:

  • Burako: An activity where participants must associate cards with concepts and situations to form pairs, fostering a deeper understanding of the connections between structural inequalities and everyday experiences.
  • Match-up (Level 1 and Level 2): In this mode, emotion cards are used to explore how situations and concepts affect participants. In Level 2, an empowerment card is added as oracular advice, helping to connect reflections with possible solutions.
  • Oracle: This modality invites participants to seek inspiration in the face of a personal or collective challenge related to their experiences as women. The cards offer thoughtful messages that can guide decisions or open new perspectives.
  • Oracle for Sorority: Designed to strengthen bonds between participants, this game fosters solidarity by inviting women to share inspiring cards and reflect on how they relate to their own stories.

A tool for collective construction

Pro Mujer, committed to women’s empowerment and the construction of more equal communities, is committed to this tool as a way to transform conversations into actions and learning into meaningful experiences.

“Addressing issues like gender and inequality is not always easy, but the Women’s Card Deck is presented as a transformative tool,” commented Georgia Rothe, global coordinator for gender, diversity, equality, and inclusion at Pro Mujer. “Beyond facilitating learning, it creates spaces where women can recognize each other, connect, and build empathy and sisterhood as drivers of change.”

The Women’s Card Deck is an invitation to open honest conversations about the realities that women face every day. With simple but powerful dynamics, this tool reminds us that change begins by recognizing inequalities and jointly building strategies to address them.
