Shared Vision between Pro Mujer and Prosperia Transforms Landscape of Vision Health in Mexico

Mexico is among the top ten countries with the highest incidence of vision loss worldwide. The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness reported that, in 2020, around 16 million Mexicans were facing this issue, with approximately 55% being women. The Mexican Society of Ophthalmology estimates that around 80% of cases of blindness in the country could be prevented.

Recognizing the importance of promoting vision health in Mexico, Pro Mujer, in partnership with Prosperia, an innovative Mexican healthtech company, carried out two vision health campaigns on February 21 and 22 in Acueducto, Mexico City, and Tulancingo, Hidalgo, respectively. Through RetinIA, a screening platform powered by artificial intelligence, 47 free exams were conducted to detect lesions and diseases that may endanger patients’ vision.

The exam, aimed at people over 40 years old and those with a family history of diabetes and hypertension, involves capturing high-resolution photographs that are analyzed using RetinIA to identify suspicious signs of conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, macular edema, macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts, and pathological myopia. As part of this collaboration, serious risks of developing diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma were detected in four people.

Throughout 2024, the initiative aims to conduct 300 exams in our offices in Mexico City and the State of Mexico. Pro Mujer continues to expand its reach and to advocate for the integral health of its users. In 2023, Pro Mujer inaugurated two clinics in Mexico City and one in the State of Mexico. With 22 service points spread across eight states, the organization has managed to provide more than 13,600 healthcare services, consolidating its commitment to women’s well-being and their access to quality services.
