Pro Mujer Continues to Make History in Nicaragua!

As part of our commitment to supporting women in Nicaragua, Pro Mujer recently celebrated the opening of two new offices in Jinotega and Rivas, bringing our total number of offices in Nicaragua up to 10.

Pro Mujer opened its first office in Nicaragua in 1996 as part of our efforts to empower underserved women to realize their full potential. Since then, we have supported thousands of Nicaraguans on their path to success. Today, Pro Mujer is one of the country’s most important social advocacy and microfinance institutions.

In 2022 alone, Pro Mujer provided more than 60,000 health and well-being services, impacted the lives of more than 52,000 women through our financial services, and provided more than 19,000 women with access to skilling and capacity building opportunities.

Pro Mujer’s trajectory in Nicaragua reflects the powerful social impact possible by implementing microfinance and social advocacy with a gender lens, results that have been recognized by multiple different organizations.

During the 9th Annual Latin American Community Banking Forum, Pro Mujer was also recognized for promoting community banking and financial inclusion in the region. Gloria Ruiz, Pro Mujer Country Representative in Nicaragua, was also recognized for her role in the effective execution and implementation of community banking as part of Pro Mujer’s credit portfolio.

This recognition comes on the heels of Pro Mujer Nicaragua’s recent Gold Certification from CERISE and SPTF, which recognized the organization’s high performance in Client Protection and rigorous commitment to customer service and care.

REDCAMIF also awarded Pro Mujer Nicaragua a Transparency Certificate in recognition of the entity’s contributions to financial transparency in the inclusive finance sector and A+ transparency rating.

In 2022, international consulting firm 60 Decibels highlighted Pro Mujer Nicaragua as the microfinance organization with the greatest social impact in Latin America and the Caribbean. Data collected for this study showed that:

  • 69% of women are accessing a loan for the first time.
  • 91% report that their business income increased.
  • 93% say their quality of life has improved.
  • 83% say they have been able to reach their financial goals.
