Pro Mujer and the National Institute of Public Health Strengthen Maternal Care Through a Collaboration Focused on Dignified Treatment

Mexico City, December 18, 2025 — Pro Mujer and the National Institute of Public Health (INSP, by its Spanish acronym) concluded a strategic collaboration aimed at strengthening the quality of maternal health care in Mexico, through an approach centered on dignified treatment, prevention of obstetric violence, and evidence generation to improve health systems.

This collaboration was formalized within the framework of the project “Sana y Segura: My Sexual and Reproductive Health,” implemented by Pro Mujer with funding from MSD for Mothers, and focused on INSP’s technical support for methodological design, training, and the evaluation of on-the-ground interventions.

From 2023 through its completion in 2025, the Sana y Segura project reached more than 5,000 people in the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Hidalgo, through a comprehensive model that combined institutional strengthening, technical training, community-based work, and digital tools.

As part of this collaboration, the INSP team trained Pro Mujer staff on dignified treatment and sexual and reproductive rights, and provided technical support to the methodology used to train health personnel in the communities.

The collaboration also included the development and validation of training tools, such as the Manual for First Responders in the Care of Obstetric Violence, designed to strengthen the capacities of health personnel and partner organizations to identify, prevent, and address practices that violate women’s rights during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.

This collaboration reinforces our commitment to quality care and dignified treatment in maternal health. Working with a national public health reference institution such as INSP allows us to strengthen our methodologies, generate evidence, and contribute more effectively to transforming health systems in contexts of high vulnerability,” said René Jiménez, Pro Mujer’s Global Health Director.

For Pro Mujer, this collaboration represents a key step in its effort to drive the transformation of health systems by combining territorial intervention, institutional strengthening, and evidence generation. This joint work reaffirms the importance of connecting civil society organizations, academic institutions, and public-sector actors to advance toward maternal care that is more just, respectful, and centered on women.
