Pro Mujer and The Solidarity Project Support Preventive Care for Honduran Women

In Honduras, various geographical, economic, and socio-cultural barriers hinder the early diagnosis, prevention, and timely treatment of noncommunicable diseases that disproportionately affect women, such as breast cancer and type 2 diabetes.

More than 1.5 million people are living with diabetes in the country, and between 12 and 150 new cases are detected every day, with a higher prevalence in women. Breast cancer continues to be a leading cause of death for women, with a rate of 13.3 deaths per 100,000 women. In terms of sexual and reproductive health, more than 30,000 teenage pregnancies between the ages of 10 and 19 are reported each year, and estimates are that at least 40% of pregnancies were unplanned or unintended, some of them the result of sexual violence.

In the face of this reality, Pro Mujer develops educational chatbots that promote prevention and women’s knowledge and informed decision-making about their health and bodies. As part of this partnership, The Solidarity Project provides additional support, sharing these chatbots with their communities and networks.

These accessible, free, and confidential digital tools focus on three key issues: type 2 diabetes, breast cancer, and sexual and reproductive health. Thanks to this partnership, Pro Mujer and The Solidarity Project are working together so that more Honduran women are able to access these resources.

In 2024, Pro Mujer’s health chatbots reached more than 16,000 people in Latin America, providing key information and support for prevention and self-care.

“This partnership allows us to bring digital health solutions to women who have historically faced multiple barriers to accessing reliable information,” said René Jiménez, Global Manager of Health Services at Pro Mujer. “It also strengthens our commitment to using technology to directly impact people’s well-being.”

With this partnership, Pro Mujer and The Solidarity Project reaffirm their commitment to the right to health and access to information as a fundamental pillar of women’s well-being.
