Great news! The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has recognized Pro Mujer with an “Honorable Mention” in the “Economics and Finance” category for the excellent work the organization has performed in combating poverty and empowering women as part of this year’s Juscelino Kubitschek Prize. The Prize recognizes those institutions that have made a significant, outstanding contribution to the economic and social development of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Nominated by Sir James Wolfensohn, former President of the World Bank, Pro Mujer was selected as one of eight organizations to be recognized out of 337 nominated organizations from across Latin America, the Caribbean, the United States and Europe.
The selection committee was comprised of a number of international leaders including the President of the IDB, Luis Alberto Moreno, Michel Camdessus, former Director General of the International Monetary Fund, Ricardo Lagos, former President of Chile, Ricardo Maduro Joest, former President of Honduras and Bill Richardson, former Governor of New Mexico. The four winning organizations and the four organizations receiving Honorable Mentions will be recognized at an award ceremony that will take place next March 2012 in Montevideo, Uruguay during the IDB’s Board of Governors meeting.
In making the announcement, Rosario Pérez, Chief Executive Officer for Pro Mujer said, “For more than 20 years, Pro Mujer has been and continues to be committed to providing women living in impoverished communities with easy and convenient access to vital financial, human development and health services. These services allow women to build sustainable livelihoods and a better, more dignified future for themselves and their families. This recognition is true validation of our efforts. On behalf of our more than 1,500 employees and the more than 220,000 strong and resilient women we serve, I thank the members of the selection committee and the IDB.”
The four winning organizations and the four organizations receiving Honorable Mentions will be recognized at an award ceremony that will take place next March 2012 in Montevideo, Uruguay during the IDB’s Board of Governors meeting.
